As every year, the miserly and mean-spirited old money-lender Ebenezer Scrooge rejects the invitation from his good-hearted nephew to share Christmas dinner with him. As every year, Scrooge accuses his faithful employee Bob Cratchit of being lazy, despite the fact that Cratchit has a terminally ill child at home. As every year, Scrooge refuses to make a Christmas donation to the poor.
Alone in his chilly apartment, on Christmas night he receives unexpected visitations from the ghost of his now-deceased former business partner and friend Jacob Marley and three other mysterious spirits. They have come to take him on a journey into the past, back to his grim old school, but also to his warm-hearted fiancée; into the present, to the Cratchit family’s Christmas dinner; and finally, into the dark future. At first, Scrooge is unimpressed by their efforts. Yet during the course of the night’s journey through time, Scrooge recognises how many mistakes he has made in his life and that, if he is not able to soften his cold heart, his future will be far from rosy. And thus life presents him with a second chance. He is able to learn that generosity can warm the heart and bring joy. For the first time in his life, he celebrates Christmas with all his heart, together with those people he once shut out of his life.
Not only Dickens’s book, but also countless films, helped make the story known throughout the world. For Berg however, the Muppets’ version, with Michael Caine in the title role, is essential viewing.
NÖN, Wiener Neustadt Stadttheater, Audience Development, 02.01.2018:
"This wonderful family musical, in which the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future transform the elderly, hard-hearted and merciless Scrooge into a loveable fellow human being and benefactor, clearly brought joy to young and old members of the audience alike. The touching and thought-provoking content, the sumptuous music littered with catchy tunes that went straight to the heart, the talented cast – all these took the audience by storm."
NÖN, Wiener Neustadt Stadttheater, Audience Development, 02.02.2018:
"[...] a beautiful family musical to brighten up the festive season for young and old alike."
Musical 1, Theater am Kurfürstendamm, 28.11.2015:
"All in all, this is a truly successful show that is particularly designed for children, but which will delight families and adults alike. It is a piece that quite simply belongs to Christmas."
"BZ, Theater am Kurfürstendamm, 28.11.2015:
"Since this is a story of miracles, then you will not be amazed to see a talking lantern, a tap-dancing ghost or flying scooters, which are all staged quite wonderfully by Christian Berg and director Michael Ihnow. Michael Schanze’s music underpins the entire piece, which guarantees sparkling, catchy melodies. Not even the ghosts have to be in shadow here, the spectacular lighting makes them well worth seeing. It’s not only for Scrooge that a very happy Christmas is saved."
Hamburger Abendblatt, Komödie Winterhude, 12.12.2014:
"Christian Berg was able to secure the services of Michael Schanze for the premiere of his ‘Christmas Story’. It has proved to be a very fruitful collaboration."
Blickpunkt Musical, Komödie Winterhude, Januar-März 2015:
"The music and book of this new musical are a great success. The author, director, actor and renowned clown Christian Berg has long been regarded as ‘The King of Kid’s Musicals’, and in this, his first collaboration with composer Michael Schanze, he certainly lives up to his reputation."
