Synopsis
England, the year is 1194. The young knight, Robin of Loxley, is returning to his homeland after a crusade. The King of England, Richard the Lionheart, is being held to ransom in Austria. In his absence, England is ruled by Richard’s weak brother, Prince John. In Robin’s hometown of Nottingham, there is unrest. Ever-higher taxes are impoverishing the people. There is an initial uprising, in which Robin stands with the poor and is fortunate to evade capture. He retreats into Sherwood Forest with a small band of peasant farmers and becomes an outlaw. From their secret forest hideaway, the outlaws attack the wealthy and take their belongings. The loot is firstly to be used to buy Richard’s freedom, and secondly to help the disenfranchised poor. The storming of Robin’s family seat, Loxley Castle, by the Sherriff of Nottingham, is the prompt for Robin and his men to attack Nottingham. During the attack, Robin is taken prisoner and thrown into the dungeon.
There in Nottingham Castle’s dungeon, Robin’s courage and his faith in the fight for justice begin to ebb away. The initial mistrust of his feelings for Lady Marian softens when she secretly visits him in the dungeon. He decides to give up on his struggle for justice and pledges himself to his true love, Lady Marian. Following one of her visits to the dungeon, Lady Marian is caught out by the duplicitous Lady Isabelle. Lady Marian is questioned by Lady Isabelle, Prince John and the Bishop, who force her to marry the Sherriff. She agrees to the marriage on the condition that all prisoners are to be released on her wedding day. Just before the wedding, Robin escapes from the dungeon with the help of his men. At the last moment he is able to prevent the wedding between Lady Marian and the Sherriff from taking place.
At the same time, Richard the Lionheart returns from captivity in Austria, the bounty having been paid, and confronts his brother Prince John and the co-conspirators.
The story ends happily with the union of Robin and Marian and prompts renewed hope for a benevolent and just England.

Musicals Online:
"There is a wide range of musical styles in Martin Doepke’s original music."
Musicals 4 you:
"The musical is pure adventure, mixed with a dash of romance, lots of wit, and wonderful music by the composer Martin Doepke."
Musicalzentrale, 29.11.2007:
"It’s worth seeing for the set alone. Christoph Weyer’s very naturalistic stage settings are a real triumph. Thanks to a highly innovative design, the lush green of Sherwood Forest can quickly be transformed into the grey walls of the dungeon or the chapel or the medieval castle, aided by the clever use of lighting."
